This role of Environmental Health Officer in Northampton offers an opportunity to significantly impact public health by ensuring food safety, health, and safety compliance within commercial premises. Here’s a summary of the key aspects of the role:

Main responsibilities:

  • Premises Inspections: Inspect commercial premises to ensure compliance with food safety, health and safety legislation, and to identify risks related to foodborne illnesses and infectious diseases.
  • Complaint Investigation: Investigate complaints related to food hygiene, health and safety, and incidents involving infectious diseases, foodborne illnesses, accidents, and dangerous occurrences.
  • Business Support: Coach, mentor, and guide businesses to help them comply with regulations.
  • Backlog Inspections: Help clear the backlog of inspections in North Northamptonshire (including Wellingborough, Corby, Kettering, and East) and potentially support other health-related activities.

Ideal candidate:

  • Qualifications: BSc/MSc in Environmental Health or equivalent, or Higher Certificate in Food Control.
  • Professional Registration: Registered with the EHRB/CIEH.
  • Experience: Experience in health protection, including food safety, health and safety enforcement, infectious disease control, and health promotion.
  • Enforcement Skills: Familiar with a wide range of enforcement activities and experienced in dealing with the public.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear reports and letters.
  • Organisational Skills: Able to plan, organise, and manage a caseload effectively, with minimal supervision.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Additional Requirements:

  • Full UK driving license and access to a car for work purposes.
  • Occasional requirement to work outside regular office hours (evening visits may be required).
